John Legend – Wake up everybody (Ft. The Roots, Melanie Fiona and Common)

John Legend teams up with The Roots, Melanie Fiona and rapper Common to cover the legendary Teddy Pendergrass song “Wake up everybody”. This song has a distinct Blues feel to it which suits John Legend’s singing style perfectly, and the theme is based around the world as a collective unit, and how the people should take initiative in their lives, taking chances such as education and academia with every available opportunity, as well as an underlying theme of world peace which is achievable by change.

It is nice to see the likes of The Roots providing an excellent instrumental backing, whilst Melanie Fiona’s vocals are more powerful than John Legend, who focuses on soul and calmness. This song was released under Kanye West’s label “G.o.o.d Music”, which John Legend is part of. “G.o.o.d” stands for ‘Getting out our dreams’.
However, as good as this song is, it isn’t too unique as it’s more of a polished cover than anything extradionary.
